Had dinner with my parents tonight as it was my mothers birthday. I almost got into fisticuffs with my father. What idiots. My mother said the only show she enjoys is Bill O'Reilly. I really can't believe I am related.

Then I tried to explain why gay marriage was the right thing to do. He just doesn't understand. To quote him "you have the same rights as I do. I can't marry a man either". What an idiot.

Proof this fruit fell a long way from the tree.

I know where you're coming from. My mother and stepfather, as well as my sister, all voted for Bush. I sat and talked with Mom and Sarah about it (Dad doesn't chat online and he's old, so nothing productive would come of it) and I understand their reasoning about it. I don't agree with it, not by a long shot, but I do understand it.

What we have is a long, slightly uphill battle. The despair is there, the fear is there, but DO NOT let that get to you. Take the time to grieve and lick your wounds, but don't let that rule your life. In a couple of days or weeks, go back and read this. Email your congressfolk. Find out how to help. Get involved locally, and get others to do so as well. Put a face on what you believe in. DO NOT let people get through ONE DAY without seeing that the 'gay community' is not a faceless mass, but rather men and women in their own community fighting the battle for equal rights.

Been there
My partner and I rebuilt our house and lived with his parents for 10 months. They love the O'Reilly Factor. They also wondered why we didn't hang out and watch TV with them, despite the fact that they certainly knew MY views on Mr. sexual harassment.
